Dear Computer Lady,

 

I have had my computer for about 6 months.  I have never run Disk Defrag until now. I am having a hard time running Disk Defrag.  It only gets to 2%..should I try running it all night?

Dear Angela,

 

There could be more than one reason why Defrag is not working for you. The first thing to do, is probably allow it to run all night. Large hard drives take many hours to run defrag.

 

If you are still at 2% in the morning, you know that something is giving you a problem.

Did you run Scan disk first? Scan disk will often fix problems that might prevent defrag from running properly.

 

Do you have programs or a screen saver running in the background? Turn your screen saver off, and right click on the icons near the clock and close them.

 

Finally, if nothing else will work, you might want to try a commercial program like PowerDefrag at http://www.powerdefrag.com/
