Dear Computer Lady,
I have been a faithful reader of your newsletters and newspaper column for the past few years. Your advice and web tips have been of great help, however I have one dilemma I can't seem to figure out. It's in Microsoft Word.
It seems that any letter I have written and saved in my documents when I go to retrieve them they show up with the current date on the top of the letter, not the original date the letter was written. This is frustrating when a copy of letter the is needed.
Also after retrieving a past letter the date the letter was retrieved shows up in the file section of Microsoft Word, however if I put my mouse pointer over the letter icon in my documents it always shows the original date of my letters.
Any help you can give would be appreciated.
Paul
Dear Paul,
You did not mention what method you use to put the date in the letters. This behavior is common when using a letter template.
However, I can tell you how to insert a date that will not change.
Click in your letter where you want the date to appear.
Select "Insert" and "Date & Time" from the menu bar.
In the window that appears, select the way you want your date to appear, and make sure there is NO check mark in the box near the bottom that says "Update Automatically" (That is what makes the date change) and click "OK".
If you want all future date insertions to not update automatically, click the "Default..." button just before you click "OK".
