Dear Computer Lady,

First of all I love your newsletter. I learn so much from it. My question is this. I just got a new computer with Windows XP. I am new to Windows XP and was wonder when I click on start, then all programs when the menu for all the programs come up, why are some of the programs highlighted a light brown? It varies on which programs are highlighted.

Thanks in Advance. Melissa

Dear Melissa,

I think this is Microsoft's way of trying to help the user out by highlighting programs that were recently installed but not used yet.

When people have many programs already installed, and they install a new one, that new program is sometimes hard to find in the start menu. I know I have spent a few minutes puzzling over where the shortcut to my new program decided to hide itself.

Windows XP, highlights recently installed programs to make them easier to spot the first time you go to use them. After you have used the shortcut a few times, the highlighting will go away.
